DAM & MAM at the heart of NAB Show 2025

The 2025 NAB Show, held April 5–9 in Las Vegas, convened over 55,000 attendees from 160 countries, spotlighting the latest advancements in broadcast, media, and entertainment technologies. This year's theme, "Storytelling at Scale," underscored the industry's focus on leveraging technology to enhance content creation and distribution.

For a consultancy company like Activo, it was important to move ahead NAB this year along side our DAM and MAM projects st the heart of video workflow from capture to distribution, from media creation to distribution. We spent also the time to interview the top vendors and key players of the industry.

The top Key Themes & Innovations NAB 2025 :

1. Artificial Intelligence (AI) Integration

AI was a central focus, with applications ranging from automated captioning and translation to smart editing and cloud-based production. Companies like Amagi showcased AI-powered tools for content programming, while Black Box highlighted AI's role in automating tasks and enhancing real-time analytics.

2. NextGen TV (ATSC 3.0) Advancements

Broadcasters demonstrated significant progress in NextGen TV, offering features like High Dynamic Range (HDR) video and immersive Dolby Atmos audio. With 76% of U.S. households now in range, innovations included smart broadcasting, emergency alert systems, and AI-based services such as real-time translations.

3. Creator Economy Expansion

The expanded Creator Lab provided a dedicated space for digital-first content creators, showcasing tools and platforms supporting the creator economy. Sessions addressed monetization strategies on platforms like YouTube, TikTok, and Twitch, reflecting the growing influence of independent creators.

4. Sports Summit Highlights

  • Exhibitors: Over 1,050, including 125 first-time exhibitors
  • First-Time Attendees: 53% of participants

Of course beyond all the hardware supplier and camera provider, we were DAM (Digital Asset Management) and MAM (Media Asset Management) systems with a recap and analysis to help you understand their differences, similarities, and ideal use cases.

Key Takeaways about video files :

  • Each jump in resolution roughly quadruples the pixel count, hence potential file size.
  • Compression (H.264, H.265) drastically reduces sizes, but quality and editability may suffer.
  • 8K and 16K are rarely used outside of specialized applications (e.g., IMAX, research, CGI/VFX)

.

The weight (file size) and dimensions (resolution) of video files increase significantly as you go from HD to 4K, 8K, and 16K. Here's a comparison based on standard formats, frame rates, and bitrates.

What Are DAM and MAM?

1. DAM (Digital Asset Management):

  • A centralized system used to store, organize, manage, and retrieve a wide range of digital assets.
  • Common asset types: images, PDFs, documents, presentations, logos, and marketing materials.
  • Often used in marketing, branding, and enterprise content management.

Key Features:

  • Metadata tagging
  • Version control
  • Permissions and restrictions
  • IP rights
  • Search and retrieval
  • Workflow and permissions
  • Integration with CMS, CRM, and creative tools (e.g., Adobe CC)

2. MAM (Media Asset Management):

  • A specialized subset of DAM focused on managing video and audio content, especially in broadcast, post-production, and media industries.
  • Handles large, high-resolution files and often includes editing, transcoding, and playback tools.

Key Features:

  • Support for time-based metadata
  • Proxy generation and previewing
  • Integration with editing software (e.g., Avid, Adobe Premiere, Final Cut)
  • Advanced media workflows (e.g., ingest, review & approval)
  • Storage and archive management

Analysis: DAM vs. MAM

When to Use Which?

  • Choose DAM if you manage a wide variety of digital content types (documents, images, graphics) and need a user-friendly solution for marketing and branding teams.
  • Choose MAM if your focus is on managing and manipulating media-rich content (videos, audio) and you need advanced tools for media workflows.

We got the opportunity during NAB 2025 to visit the key MAM players. Popular DAM and MAM systems, followed by use-case based suggestions to help you choose the right solution depending on your needs

🎬 Perfect Memory

Overview: Perfect Memory offers a semantic, AI-driven MAM solution known as "MAM-as-a-Brain." It's designed to transform raw data into actionable knowledge, making it particularly suitable for broadcasters, archivists, and journalists.

Key Features:

  • Semantic AI: Utilizes AI to auto-generate metadata, enabling precise search capabilities.
  • Moment Tagging: Allows users to tag specific segments within media files for easy retrieval.
  • Cross-Semantic Search: Facilitates complex searches across various criteria, including editorial rights.
  • Integration: Seamlessly integrates with EVS MediaCeption for real-time ingest and export operations.
  • Ideal For: Organizations requiring advanced semantic search capabilities and integration with existing broadcast workflows.

If you walked past the West Hall, you couldn’t miss Perfect message on the big screen that everyone was talking about: 'AI sucks.'

Perfect explained : " Why? Because when artificial intelligence is used without strategy or context, it creates more noise than value. Using AI to recreate information that already exists or to generate data, without a guarantee of accuracy, only adds redundancy. Why reinvent what already exists and can be easily inferred? However, when orchestrated intelligently, combining multiple AI tools and integrating them within your business context with Knowledge Graphs and ontologies, AI becomes what we call Reasoning AI."

Taking control of  Data Supply Chain

Managing content workflows remains a major challenge across the industry. With scattered data and growing volumes, teams often struggle to extract real value. What’s needed now is structured, and actionable information & content that’s ready to move through your workflows efficiently. By turning raw data into enriched, organized content, you gain control, speed, and clarity at every step of the process.

Making users more efficient than ever

User experience is no longer a nice-to-have, it’s essential. At NAB, it was clear: professionals want platforms that are powerful, intuitive, and purpose-built for their daily needs. From SaaS to smart automation, solutions must adapt to real workflows, not the other way around.

Annotating and structuring content in real-time, during capture, is becoming a must-have for increased reactivity, making content instantly usable (editing, publishing, monetizing), enabling smarter AI orchestration, and fostering teamwork across departments. Every second of video becomes instantly valuable and useful.

That’s why Perfect have partnered with Broadteam, an innovative solution for broadcaster, to push these capabilities even further, and it’s already in action. Check out NASCAR’s use case to see this technology in action here.

Since this NAB, Perfect Memory exclusively announced their opening on the South American market with the signing of the second largest TV broadcaster in the world. And some pretty huge announcements to come in the world of sports.
On the tech solution side, the platform continues its optimization towards hyper-simplified management (no code), allowing for ever greater scalability (integrating any new database/system, for example, at any time and with complete ease).
Next meetings: MPTS in London on May 14 and 15, then the IBC in Amsterdam in September
